Special Issues

The conference will organize two special issues in two reputable journals – Area Development and Policy and Transactions in Planning and Urban Research. We will organize special sessions for these two special issues during the conference, which will provide an invaluable opportunity for in-depth presentation of research and direct communications with guest editors and other contributors.

Doctoral Student Paper Competition

Doctoral students who are interested in this competition should choose the “Doctoral Student Paper Competition” on the abstract submission system and send the full paper to the conference email UCRN2025@126.com by May 15, 2025.

  • Your full paper submission should include the following information combined into one document:

   a.The cover page of the paper should include the author’s name, institutional affiliation, the program he/she is enrolled in, mailing address, and        email address, plus the name and email address of the person who writes the recommendation letter for the student.

   b.The full paper, with the abstract, references, and tables and figures, if applicable.

   c.A recommendation letter from the student’s adviser should be addressed to the conference organizing committee including: 1) reasons why the    paper merits consideration, and 2) affirmation that the student would participate the conference if the paper were selected. The recommendation      letter is the responsibility of the student and must be submitted along with the paper.

  • ​  Eligible students are Ph.D. students in any discipline relevant to Urban China research who have not received their doctoral degrees by July 30, 2025.

  • ​The paper must not have been published or accepted for publication at the time of submission. The student must be the first author at the time of paper submission.

  • ​Each selected paper will be assigned to a member of the advisory board for comments and suggestions for revision both at the conference and afterwards.

  • ​Papers should be no longer than 8,500 words (excluding references and footnotes) with no more than 10 tables and figures.

  • ​The UCRN Advisory Board will identify the Best Doctoral Student Paper and the runner up. Recipients will be awarded a certificate at the conference.

URCN Best Conference Paper Award for Junior Scholars

The Urban China Research Network (UCRN) is continuing to announce the Best Conference Paper Award for Junior Scholars at the 2025 UCRN conference. The intention of the award is to support and promote the research of early-career scholars on urban China.

Candidates for this award must have received their Ph.D. after 2022 and can be the single author or the lead author of the article.

Junior scholars who are interested should submit a paper abstract for the regular sessions of the UCRN conference through the conference submission website by 20 February 2025. Please indicate you are interested in participating in the Best Conference Paper Award Competition on the submission form. Decision on proposal acceptance will be announced by 15 March 2025, by email. If accepted, candidates should submit a full manuscript – along with 1) a cover page with the author’s name, institutional affiliation, mailing address, and email address, and 2) a photocopy of the Ph.D. degree diploma, combined in the same document – by 15 May 2025. Candidate should also register and present the paper in-person at the conference.

The paper must not have been published or accepted for publication at the time of submission.
